Summer Living Room Decor Ideas

July 29, 2021

Last Updated on December 3, 2024

After I pressed publish on my Serena & Lily Home Decor Favorites post, I added this brass floor lamp and the Parisian side table I was coveting to cart. After both pieces arrived, I started pushing furniture around the house, rearranging, restyling, redecorating. I’m loving where they landed in the TV room and wanted to share the space and some additional summer living room decor ideas with you.

Funny enough, the sheer linen curtains hanging across the sliding glass door are an OG Serena & Lily purchase. Sadly, they’re no longer available (please bring them back S&L), but they moved from my former home to this house and are still going strong.

7 Summer Living Room Decor Ideas

Summer Living Room Decor Idea 1 – Add Texture

Natural textures are a great way to bring the outdoors in. Rattan, caning, seagrass, wicker, eyelet, and linen textiles are perfect examples, but even adding some fresh florals will go a long way. Trader Joe’s has a multitude of inexpensive bouquets – maybe you’re lucky enough to have them in your backyard.

2. Pick Your Color Palette

Pops of citrus colors may seem like a simple change. A pop of yellow can do wonders for a room. It’s cheery and brings those rays of sunshine. Shades of blue transport you to the seashore. An easy summer living room decor update is to add a pillow, florals, artwork, or even a fun lampshade. These small decorative accents are easy seasonal swaps and keep your home decor budget-friendly.

3. Lighten The Look

Keep your room light and bright by switching up your textiles. Your home does not need to be crisp white to have summer living room vibes. Think of lightning in terms of swapping out velvet curtains for linen, wool for eyelet, solid woods for caning or rattan.  Gauzy curtains like the ones hanging in my living room are a perfect way to lighten a space.

4. Add Contrast

If you’re looking to give your living room a summery pastel color pop, lighten your lights and darken your darks. This will help those soft colors stand out without making your room look like a fruit bowl. A subtle color palette will stand out and dominate your living room without overwhelming the eye. A few colors to look at might be mossy green, Denimes blue, or ochre.

5. Add A Touch Of Coastal

No, you don’t need paddles hung on the wall or a hand-lettered sign that says, “beach life” to add summer decor to your living room. You also don’t need to live in a beach house. Simple upgrades like a seagrass or shell mirror will give you serious beach vibes without going overboard on a nautical theme. The key takeaway is finding that beachy balance with subtle nods to a summer ocean breeze. I personally adore this shell-covered lamp (which just so happens that all lighting is presently on sale).

6. Don’t Forget The Greenery

The easiest summer living room decor idea is to simply add plants. Personally, I lean towards faux plants because they are low maintenance, but real potted and hanging plants are yet another simple way to bring the outdoors in and give your room some summertime flair. If you don’t want to commit to plants, add some dried eucalyptus or faux olive tree stems to a clear glass vase or pop shop one of these affordable faux fiddle leaf fig trees. If you wanna get really fancy, try your hand at this faux flowers in resin DIY.

7. Keep It Simple

Remember how we lighten the look with textiles from above. The same thing goes for accessories. Declutter and keep your summer decor to a minimum. Fewer decorative items on shelving and tables mean less cleaning and more time for fun in the sun. Save those heavier decor items for cozy fall decorating.

Summer Dining Room Decor Ideas

I know, I know, we’ve been chatting about living rooms, but while putting the above mood board together, my ADHD kicked in and I started perusing dining room decor. How’s that grasscloth wallcovering for texture and greenery? And that table for keeping things light and airy. And the round jut rug. Ya, I’m obsessed with this look.
