Work From Home Office And Gym Design
Last Updated on December 3, 2024
Right now, I’m picturing Linda…organizer of the One Room Challenge…standing outside my room with a whistle yelling, “Time’s up! Drop what you’re doing and step away from the room.” Today marks the end of an 8 week-long journey in home decor. I’ve given my work from home office a complete redesign and transformed an old storage closet into a home gym. Let’s take a closer look.

Modern Eclectic Home Office And Home Gym Room Makeover

For years, I’ve dreamed of being asked to be a Featured Designer in the One Room Challenge, and during a time when the entire world has been in crisis mode, I can’t even begin to explain what a wonderful distraction this project was for me. The sponsors really stepped up to the plate and supported me through this interior journey. And shoutout to you! Thank you for cheering me on. If you’ve missed any of the previous weeks, you can check out the entire process from beginning to end.

For my new friends visiting me today, hi, my name is Kyla, and I’m a home decor blogger based in Chicago, IL. This is my 3rd One Room Challenge…but my 1st time ever as a Featured Designer. If you want the daily behind-the-scenes updates, check out my Instagram or TikTok.

That black and brass lotus chandelier from Hudson Valley Lighting was love at first sight. I first spied it last year at High Point Furniture Market and literally melted my heart on the spot. I knew immediately when designing this space, it was to be the center of attention.
That antique chippy cabinet was an estate sale find last summer as was that antique French confit pot. I filled it with all my favorite vintage finds including Ethan the monkey who I thought at first might have a creepy, haunting story to tell, but wound up just being a weighted bookend.

You can really see the texture of the wallpaper here. It has an almost a zebra print pattern to it, but with its monochromatic colorway, it’s not overly busy. This design, in particular, is from the Delightful Collection from the European Prints and Textures Line by Pacific Design International. When you get up close and personal to it, you’ll detect a subtle shimmer to it as well. Ya, it’s pretty spectacular if I don’t say so myself.

Woah, wait that giant clamshell is new! Nope, this guy used to live on the old wood dining room table but moved out when the marble pastry table moved in. It’s been looking for a new home and finally found it on this graphic black and white credenza (no longer available).

This might be one of my favorite views of this space. The last-minute decision to add an arched entryway into the home gym was srsly brilliant. My contractor really made this place shine and hit my deadline like a boss. Couldn’t have asked for a better contractor.

Here’s a closer look at the black tile. You can see it has a subtle metallic dot pattern that gives the wall some added texture and edginess. We moved the mirror from this wall to the longer wall. It’s a great place for a spin workout and morning yoga. With the gyms being closed here for Covid, this space has been in high demand. We continued the faux marble tile into this space as well. There was some concern with tile and weights, but this is a very non-bro gym.

Here’s a closer look at the Tony Curry pink sliced canvas artwork. I paired it with the Adidas shoe photo by Nicole Cohen.

This modern round coffee table (no longer available) works perfectly in the home gym because it doubles as storage. The lid lifts off and inside, you’ll find all the resistance bands and miscellaneous workout gear. It’s also a perfect spot for my iPad when I’m doing a workout where I need a screen.
Above it, is a more risqué painting. It’s a vintage piece I bought at auction from Rivich Antiques. I guess it reminds me why I’m working out, LOL.

Again with that arched doorway into the work from home office! I can’t even stand it. Also, you may have noticed I moved the Gino Hollander artwork of the rocking chair girl back up here. That was one heck of a score at an estate sale a couple of years ago. I had no idea what it was when I originally purchased her, but I about died when a follower informed me who the artist was. It was kind of one of those you only read about it in the news moments for me.

Here’s a better look at that modern ivory sofa. In case you are wondering, yes, it’s comfy, and I used it daily as a way to get away from my desk, yet still work. It has a vintage vibe, yet it’s not mid-century modern. More of that 80’s glam look I’ve been digging lately. I love how both paintings really bring together the colors in the space.

By now you’re probably asking yourself, “But Kyla! Did the desk arrive?” OMG YES!!!!! It did! I found this modern black wood writing desk with gold pulls, and I’m smitten. In fact, I’m sitting here right now in my work from home office typing out this post.

An Eclectic Modern Home Office To Inspire A Creative Mind

Here’s a closer look at some of the vintage treasures on my desk. And yes, that gold leopard head is a tape dispenser. The crystal ball was found on a shopping trip with my buddy Kelly who painted the black-on-black artwork in the kitchen. The vintage faux bamboo brass Chippendale chair was purchased from my girl The Savoy Flea. The brass shell task lamp was from an estate sale last summer.

It was a good thing I closed the brick-and-mortar vintage shop during Covid because I was able to shop all my vintage decor from my own stash. Thank goodness for that convenience.

So out of the entire space, what is my favorite view? Gah, that is a tough one, but I think I’m going to have to go with this one here.

I’ll bet you thought it would be the arch. Yes, but while I’m smitten with the arch, I just love that I brought the vintage clamshell back to its glory and that modern, sculptural wall sconce. I mean, come on! Don’t forget to grab that 35% off your purchase at Blueprint Lighting offer. Oh and it looks like they’ve extended their free shipping promo as well! Time’s a tickin’ on that discount, though. Use the code HIPSTERS35 at checkout.

And that’s a wrap! Not sure if I could be any happier working out and getting creative in this work-from-home office and home gym. Huge shoutout to my sponsors. I hope I did them proud.
