Mid-Century Modern Bathroom Design Mood Boards

Last month I shared that I’m buying my childhood home in Wisconsin. During my latest visit, I gave the existing bathroom decor some serious side-eye. My parents recently renovated the main bathroom, but I thought it might be fun to design a few bathroom makeover mood boards. In January, Wayfair challenged me to redesign the living room, so I thought, let’s do the same thing in the main bathroom and powder room. BTDubs, did you know that Wayfair has everything you need to renovate a bathroom? Ya, me neither. From tile to vanities, to sinks, to faucets. It wasn’t until I discovered the entire kitchen and bath section in the Chicago Wayfair store that I discovered this (it’s also all available online). Let’s get into it!

Welcome To The Main Bathroom In My Childhood Home

The small town I grew up in doesn’t have the design resources I’m used to having access to in Chicago. So when my mom was renovating the bathroom in my childhood house, she took what she could get at the local plumbing “showroom.” Think vinyl flooring, a shower kit, and builder basic lighting. It’s totally fine by normal people’s standards, but let’s HOH it up a bit.

See those light turquoise blue stripes on the wall? I painted those like 25+ years ago. They were cute back in the day, but I’m not married to them. Mark my words; they shall be painted over. I also need to think through a few quirky things, like the cabinet doors and the laundry chute.

My gut says to keep them painted the same color as the walls, but I need to explore my options. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Bathroom Vanities, Sinks, and Faucets Galore!

I’ve gone back and forth on whether I’d replace the bathroom vanity or not. If I were to remodel, would I convert it to a double sink situation, or would I keep the seated area for makeup?

I personally love the seated area for getting ready and doing my makeup, so my gut says keep this configuration. However, if this were something I didn’t grow up with, I’d probably not think twice about installing a double vanity (see design mood board below).

I also love the antique dresser I converted into a vanity in Potty Paradise. Cutting a hole in the top and dropping a sink on top was such an easy DIY and it really elevated the design. I added a couple of bathroom sinks in the collage below that could work similarly.

Did you see the black and white stripe bathroom design that went viral last year? It has been living rent-free in my brain, so I took some inspiration and added my own funky twist to dream up this bathroom mood board. And yes, all that tile is from Wayfair.

The one thing I question is the wall mirror. I really love the idea of a frameless wall mirror, but I’m not sure about the existing one in the space now, so I found this backlit wall mirror at Wayfair. I’ve seen them in hotel rooms and like them—which I realize is all that really matters—but still. Do you have a strong opinion on these wall mirrors?

Pink Powder Room Makeover Mood Board

My dad converted the walk-in closet in the primary bedroom into a powder room. It’s super tiny, but this small space is so convenient for a house that only had one bathroom at the time. It’s probably one of the best ideas my dad ever had. Although he was the only male in a family of four, so he probably took on this renovation for selfish reasons, LOL. I can’t imagine having to get ready while three women are fighting over bathroom space.

If I were to renovate this tiny bathroom, I would probably do something super dumb impractical, like put in a pink pedestal sink to really lean into that Mid-Century Modern vibe. I say this because the bathroom vanity currently there is the only storage beside the medicine cabinet. It sure would look cute, though, am I right? The smarter thing to do—upgrade the vanity with something more my style and add some funky wallpaper like Potty Paradise.
