How To Start A Collection

Happy Thursday! Erica Reitman, The Design Ninja Extraordinaire, is stopping over today to talk about how to start a collection. I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a ton…trophies, indigo, navy books, vintage barware…errrrmmmm *cough* chairs…ya let’s not go there, but sometimes it all goes in a box. I never know what to do with it all. Anyhoo, no matter what it is that you’re drawn to, Erica’s here to tell you to snap that shiz up and put it on display. Now excuse me while I go start my “Buy Me This” Pinterest board.

Needlepoints with exotic animal imagery, baskets of all shapes and sizes, large ashtrays, iced tea spoons, rocks glasses, vintage matchbooks…these are just a few of the bizarro things I’ve decided to collect over the years.

We’re All Obsessed With 70’s Design Trends, And We Didn’t Even Know It

Happy Wednesday! A couple weeks ago Erica was snapping her “new” vintage interior design magazines, and I was drooling like a mad woman. Lucite, rattan, and glam, oh my! She clued me in on that fact that we are all obsessed over 70’s design trends, and we didn’t even know it. ERMERGERD!!!!! Seriously, she’s so right! Don’t believe me, read on my friend.

I know I’m not breaking any news here when I point out that boho design is a “thing” right now in the design world.

But I discovered recently, that “boho” is *actually * just code word for 70’s design. So if you love boho, you love 70’s design. BOOM. Yep, it’s totally true.

A few weekends ago, I was at a vintage art book sale, and I found a stack of interior design magazines from the 1970s. OH MAH GERD.

There are some boho trends right now that we’ve all heard about: succulents, vintage textiles, woven wall hangings, macramé…but I wanted to dive in and dig a little deeper to uncover some of the boho trends that you might not have realized were straight out of the Saturday Night Fever, high-waisted jean, feathered hair loving 1970’s.

Get on board ppl, cause all of this stuff is H-A-P-P-E-N-I-N-G.

5 Small Space Design Rules You Should Totally Ignore

To shake things up and expand House Of Hipsters’ wings, my girl Erica Reitman (you may know her as VintageDesignMe on Snapchat, and if you don’t, go follow her now because she will make you laugh out loud…she’s also my #followfriday on Instagram today) is going to be a contributor! When I asked her, I totes expected an, “Umm, no, I don’t think so sweetie.” I mean, she writes for Elle Decor, HGTV, and Domino. So imagine my surprise when she said, “Heck yeah! Sounds like fun!” Can you say mouth on floor? Holla!!! She’s funny, sassy, and likes to swear…you’ve been warned…oh, and she claims she can kick your house’s ass. BTDubs, she can…she’s also a small space design expert. AND I love her dearly.

Truth time: I never really set out to become a small space expert. But I lived in NYC for 12 years and I was def *not* a bazillionaire, so that translated into tiny apartments with all sorts of design and space challenges. I woke up one day, and realized BOOM: I’m officially a small space design ninja.

After loads of trial and error while figuring out my small spaces, I decided I wanted to make it my mission to help others on the #smallspacesquad with me figure out easy ways to kick their tiny house’s ass.

Today I’d love to share with you 5 pieces of small space design advice that you should totally and completely ignore. I mean, you should take this advice, stomp on it, set it on fire, and then throw the ashes around in your tiny little garden. I want you to break the rules…and I mean break em’ hard.

1. DON’T USE DARK COLORS
