Styleseek Retreat: Camp Wandawega from Duncan Wolfe on Vimeo.

“why doesn’t technology work!!!!!!!!” this is what i was screaming in my office a month ago, literally having a tantrum much like my 4 year old’s display of displeasure. a pure full-on panic attack. i had instant messaged the boy…called his office phone…called our home phone…emailed him…left multiple messages…telepathically willed him to CALL ME…called my mom’s cell phone…called my dad’s cell phone, texted both of them (they happened to be staying at my home this particular day)…called the home phone again…instant messaged him again pleading for him to PICK UP THE DAMN PHONE ALREADY! this was defcon one!

why am i acting completely psychotic you ask??? camp wandawega…come again??? CAMP WANDAWEGA FOLKS! time was ticking’ my friend and i had found one! i repeat one, ONE weekend where the cabin of my dreams was open to rent.

camp wandawega hotel exerior

hotel exterior

located in elk horn, wisconsin, is a genius retreat for hipsters and creatives trying to escape the concrete jungle and wanting to take a step back into childhood. a prohibition lodge turned brothel turned kids summer camp turned pure geniusness. a flea market enthusiast’s dream come true. my dream come true. it’s been begging me to instagram the shit out of it since i discovered it’s existence about 8 months ago.

this place is vintage folks, and by vintage i mean old, rusty, probably full of tetanus. nothing’s been updated. there is no AC. the owners claim that no modern conveniences are part of the charm. each room is outfitted with antiques that have be deemed “found, free or flea” and comes equipped with vintage books, jigsaw puzzles and magazines. loaded with mosquitoes and complete with “manifesto of low expectations” and application quiz to determine if you’re cut out for this place.

the camp has a few buildings for rent on AirBNB. two side-by-side vintage cabins, a private 3 bedroom cabin nestled within the resort overlooking the lake (this is where i will reside for 4 days glorious days of my life), and an old bunkhouse—top and/or middle floors. some rooms come with a shower…some do not…but hey, there’s always the lake, right? (the cabin we rented does have a shower)

the boy and i can’t wait to have grandma and grandpa watch the kiddos, so we can immerse ourselves into the whole old-school camp experience. i foresee canoeing, shuffleboard, fishing, archery, s’mores and plenty of relaxation in our future. a nice, quiet, calm, wholesome, fun-filled weekend…just the two of us…alone. we had talked to a few other couples that were interested in joining us, but since it was a bit pricey to stay, we thought best that we should test it out the first time ourselves.

as an added bonus, the elkhorn flea market will be in full effect that weekend. i’m hoping to spy on the resort owner to get some tips and tricks since she is a flea market junkie. we are also hoping to squeeze in a dinner at mars resort and supper club. hopefully one night we’ll be sipping an old fashioned and dining on wedge salad and prime rib. (as an aside, the boy and i are on a quest for the best wedge salad…right now bavette’s in river north holds that spot…but who knows, maybe mars will give them a run…btw, ishnala in wisconsin dells is a close second)

it’s going to be so much fun! i can’t wait to share all the details with you!

a precious glimpse

man this little guy has my heart…it seems like yesterday i was holding his tiny body in my arms, spending my evenings rocking him to sleep. these days he pretends to be spider-man and fights darth vader in ominous battles filled with explosions and chase scenes.

today was one of his last days of preschool. he performed in the end of year recital and of course was the class ham…singing the loudest, clapping the loudest. i sometimes wonder where he inherited his extrovert personality…certainly not from his parents. last night we went to the welcome reception at the school he will be attending full-time come august. jamming his face full of cookies and gazing in wonderment at the art projects his future classmates hung on the walls. i watch him in these new settings, settings that for me as a child would have frightened me…he thrives in them…embraces them.

he explains to me how brave he is. not because he is conceited or arrogant, , he has no understanding of those traits. he has been told this by someone he loves and he truly believes it. sometimes it scares me…how brave he is.

roaming the new hallways, looking at the art projects, he was full of questions last night. “is that a pirate ship mommy?” “what is that guy doing?” “why is his mouth drawn like that?” “where are his eyes?” “can we go to the classroom?” it went on and on…his mind in full exploration.

lately he has been singing along to the songs we play in the car and yesterday he requested i play only german songs. der kuckuck und der esel, die hatten einen streit, wer wohl am besten sänge…and there were more questions in the car “mommy, do you have both hands on the steering wheel?” “are we going too fast?” “is that water tower moving?” “why did that guy honk at you?” “why is this road so bumpy?” “what did that sign say?” “can we listen to the hamster dance song now?” boy do i regret adding that song to his iPod playlist.

my love, every day i see small glimpses into your world. a world that is growing bigger, for a bigger boy.  i look forward to the time i get to spend with you. to listen to you. to play with you. to share with you. i love you my dear. you make me feel like a sweepstakes winner.

i’m addicted

black sweater coat

an intervention might be nearing my household. there seems to be a private courier service (UPS) between my home and the shopbop warehouse. the boy tells me once a week that another box has arrived from madison, sorry daddy, sorry credit card…i’m giddy with excitement though because it usually contains something by the designer mara hoffman. for me, everything she designs is love at first sight. i mean, her patterns just kill it! lately, i’ve been wearing the above black sweater coat with the GENIUS tee by TEXTILE elizabeth and james and my black paige demin skinny pants. the sweater is so cozy on a snowy day, and i love that i can wear it open or tied. also, the knit is super tight and completely worth the spend.

mara hoffman sun dress

the mara hoffman obsession kinda started with this dress. seriously, what is not to like here, am i right? it even has pockets! i wore this last summer with bright neon yellow sandals, so cute! looking at it now, i can’t wait for the snow to melt…put me on a beach right now and stick a boozy fruity cocktail in my hand already!

canvas bag

when i put this bag in my shopping cart, i shook my head and asked my computer, “what are you thinking? it is 3 weeks before christmas, geez!” but i just couldn’t help myself. besides it just happened to be an additional 20% off with a shopbop promo code.

when it arrived i knew i had made the right decision, but how to justify it to the boy? easy, it was my new overnight bag. you see, it doesn’t matter if we go to wisconsin for the weekend or spend 2 weeks in hawaii, i bring the same huge honkin’ black roller bag each and every time. this decision made for one very happy hubby when he heard we would not be lugging that thing around on every weekend get away. SUCCESS!

black beaded dress

the laser cut beaded neck maxi dress was the purchase du jour. the boy’s company is sending us to kauai in a few months, and one night will be quite formal. being a jeans and t-shirt kinda gal, this gorg dress will be my ticket to elegance with a twist of boho, tribal funkiness. i’m still unsure what shoe will pair best, but i’m on the hunt already and these might be a contender.

purple lattice swimsuit

and speaking of hawaii, i think i basically lived in this swimsuit for a week last year on our vacation to maui. it even held up surfing, although the lattice work made for a interesting patterned tan line. this suit will definitely be making its way back on our return trip this year. i can hear the ocean waves already and can taste the mai tai on my lips.

T.H.T.K. found

longman & eagle room 55

for our new year’s celebration sans kidlets, the boy and i decided to staycation in logan square. we rented a small room above longman & eagle…which i have to say, this might have been the most hipster hotel i’ve rested my pretty little head at. we stayed in room 55 which happens to be the largest of the 6 rooms available for rent above the one-star michelin restaurant and bar. let me tell you, this place was oozing cool…even the soap was cool! but i guess with a slogan like eat, sleep, whiskey, you kinda have to be too school for school.

interesting details at every glance, i soon found what i thought to be one of their best offerings (besides the chilled split of champagne in the frig) to be a mixtape created by jason lazarus. available for a mere $20, i had to take it home with me. but who was this man who made the mix of christopher cross, rod stewart, carole king and little river band that made my heart sing? taking me back to the days of orthodontia and elementary school.

mixtape created by jason lazarus

after a bit of google stalking (that we shall call research to make myself feel better), i found out he was a chicago-based artist, curator, writer, and educator. he has many interesting projects, but one in particular really stood out to me. stalking more, i also stumbled upon this video showcasing one of his installations.

Jason Lazarus: Too Hard to Keep (Syracuse) from Light Work on Vimeo.

in a nutshell, he initiated a growing archive of photos deemed “too hard to keep.” the project is a place for photographs and objects to exist when they are too difficult to hold on to, yet too meaningful to destroy. upon submission, participants may dictate whether the photographs may be displayed face up or face down to preserve privacy.

after watching the trailer, i couldn’t help but think of all the photos in boxes that i also could submitted to this project; not to mention the many photos i have thrown in the trash because they too were too hard to keep or a memory i chose to no longer want to revisit.

THTK2

neither the blog or the video say just how many photos mr lazarus has received, but i can only imagine it to be enough to fill an airstream trailer. i find each image fascinating while my imagination runs wild with the many possibilities as to why these certain photos were deemed “hard”. my fingers and toes are crossed with the hopes that i might view this curated installation in person one day.
